DanceOnScreen Awards 2019

The jury of the 4th edition of DanceOnScreen – Sebastian Höglinger, Liz King, Sarah Möller – decided to grant the awards to the films:

BEST FILM: „NEVER TWENTY ONE“ by Kevin Gay / Henri Coutant / Smail Kanoute | FR – 7’10“

NEVER TWENTY ONE pays tribute to the young victims of firearms in the USA who will never be given the chance to see age 21. This expression originated from the Black Lives Matter movement denounces the early deaths which plague the country and neighborhoods like the Bronx in particular.
Through testimonials of victims of the gun market system, a young dancer expresses his rage, the loss of his loved ones, and the vicious spiral he is locked into and which pushes him to play with fire. He becomes the scar of these sacrificed lives, their memories, their words, engraved forever in the curse of number 21.

JURY PRIZE: „This dance has no end“ by Fenia Kotsopoulou | GB – 10’59“

A dance dedicated to artist, drag king and gender activist Diane Torr who passed away in May 2017. „A year to the day, I dance in a black room : a single shot fusing male and female as ode to life and death. I lift my arms and dance like there is no tomorrow as the camera follows. No edits or retakes : the aim is not to please or excite but to offer myself as site for collective unburdening“.

The audience of the festival gave its voice too! …with the result of:

AUDIENCE PRIZE: „Intrinsic Moral Evil“ by Harm Weistra | NL – 10′

Intrinsic Moral Evil seems to be a tale of identity and coming of age. But above all, the three dancers play with the viewer’s perception and expectations. The layered story gradually develops; revealing its last secrets just before the end credits start. Inviting the audience to make its own interpretation.
